When the Holidays Feel Heavy

For many, the holidays are filled with joy and connection. But for those grieving the loss of a loved one, this season can bring deep sadness, loneliness, and emotional pain.

Grief is a natural response to loss — but the holidays, with their focus on family and tradition, can make those feelings especially intense.

Why Grief Feels Stronger During the Holidays

  • 🎄 Traditions and Memories – Family gatherings and holiday rituals can bring reminders of who is missing.

  • 💔 Empty Chairs at the Table – Visual reminders at gatherings often deepen feelings of loss.

  • 🕒 Increased Reflection – The end of the year naturally brings reflection on the past and those we’ve lost.

  • 🌟 Social Pressure to Be Joyful – The “holiday cheer” message everywhere can feel isolating when you’re grieving.

Healthy Ways to Cope With Grief

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

💙 Give yourself permission to feel sadness, anger, or even moments of joy. All emotions are valid.

2. Adjust Traditions

🎁 Create new traditions that honor your loved one, like lighting a candle, sharing stories, or making a favorite recipe.

3. Set Boundaries

🛑 It’s okay to say no to events or activities that feel overwhelming. Choose what supports your healing.

4. Seek Connection

🤝 Spend time with people who understand and support your grief, whether family, friends, or support groups.

5. Practice Self-Care

🕯️ Rest, eat nourishing meals, and give yourself space to recharge. Small acts of care matter.

When Grief Becomes Overwhelming

While grief is natural, prolonged or complicated grief may lead to depression, anxiety, or isolation. Signs you may need extra support include:

  • Intense sadness lasting months without relief

  • Inability to function in daily life

  • Avoiding all reminders of your loved one

  • Feeling hopeless or disconnected from others

At Bay Psychiatry of Wisconsin, we provide:

  • Therapy to process loss and build coping skills

  • Medication management when grief leads to depression or anxiety

  • Family support to navigate loss together

  • Care in-person in Green Bay, Door County, Wausau, and Oshkosh — and via telehealth across Wisconsin

You’re Not Alone

Grief during the holidays can feel overwhelming, but healing is possible. With compassion, support, and healthy coping strategies, it’s possible to carry memories of your loved one while still finding meaning in the season.
